Let's chat.

Thursday, May 27, 2010

I have had so much going on lately, but nothing big enough that it deserves an entire post all to itself.  So you know what that means, right?

Yep.  You guessed it.  Bullets!

  • Remember Scruffy?  The cute dog that Joey and Taylor rescued while on a bike ride?  Well, turns out she had a microchip, so she's now back with her owner.  Hopefully the owner won't lose her again.
  • Wanna know the worst alarm clock in the world?  The house alarm when Joey forgets to turn it off before letting the dog out.  It's ok.  I was already awake.
  • Taylor had his kindergarten awards ceremony yesterday.  I didn't go.  I'm officially the worst mom ever.
  • For the record, the reason I didn't go is because for some reason, every appointment has fallen into this week and I've missed a ridiculous amount of time at work.  Taylor told me yesterday morning that if I couldn't come, it was ok.  He's officially the sweetest boy ever.  (I still feel like a horrible parent.)
  • Ashton leaves for summer camp next weekend and we had the parent meeting last night.  Usually I don't go because, um... I can read all the info myself.  I don't need you to read it to me.  BUT, this time, Ashton doesn't know anyone that's going so I took her with me to meet her counselor and the other girls in her group.  She's no longer worried about camp and officially pumped out of her mind.
  • Obviously, I'm obsessed with the word officially this morning.
  • Ashton is having 3 (more) teeth extracted tomorrow.  For some odd reason, her baby teeth refuse to come out on their own so I have to pay an oral surgeon to remove them.  I think there's a conspiracy.
  • We leave for the beach tomorrow.  This could not have come at a better time.  I need a vacation in the worst way.
  • It kind of annoys me when people blog but don't have the date on the post. (Sorry if this is something you do.  I'm not trying to offend anyone.)  Why do people blog without the date?  I like to know if the post is recent or from 3 years ago.  KWIM?
  • I'm sure you're all dying to know the outcome of my hair situation.  I'm getting it cut this evening.

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

I'm sure some of you have seen this public service announcement around before, but I thought I'd resurrect it since I have quite a few new followers.

Here's the scoop:

We all know that when someone leaves a comment on our blogs, we receive the comment via an email notification. (Well, I assume you all have your settings that way.) A lot of the time when I receive comments, I like to reply to the comment via email. 'Cuz let's face it, no one ever goes back to a posts that you've commented on, opens up the comments, and checks to see if anyone replied via comment to anything you wrote, right?

So, in order for people to be able to respond to your comments, you have to make one minor change to the settings in your blogger profile. I'm literally begging all of you to check and be sure you have this setting correct - especially since I went along forever thinking mine was correct, when it really wasn't.  DOH!

Here is how to change the setting:

  1. From your DASHBOARD, click EDIT PROFILE, which in on the left hand side of the screen next to your profile picture.
  2. This will take you to the EDIT USER PROFILE screen.
  3. Look in the PRIVACY section.
  4. Click on the box that says, "Show my email address."
  5. In the IDENTITY section, enter in an email address (if there isn't already one there).
  6. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on SAVE PROFILE.

This quick change to your settings will be really helpful when someone asks a question through a comment or when I want to reply in general.

Thanks peeps!  Hopefully we'll be back to regularly scheduled blogging tomorrow.

Hair woes

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Lately I've been having some trouble with my hair.  It started about 4 months ago when I noticed that one section in my bang was really rough.  And by really rough, I mean, it looked totally fried.

I panicked, called my stylist and begged for help.  We chatted, she recommended a Bumble & Bumble product that she had on order, and also suggested I try this:

I ordered it immediately on Amazon.com and began using it as soon as it arrived.  I think it helped a little, but it smelled like bad men's cologne.  And I mean bad!

I kept babying my hair - turned down the heat on my hair dryer and flat iron and tried to be very careful with that section of hair - but that didn't seem to help either.  At my next hair appointment, she trimmed that section up a bit and I got the original product she had recommended:
With this product, you add it to your dry, styled hair and it dries almost immediately.

Ok girls, I'm totally freaking out because nothing seems to be helping!  I have always had very healthy hair, but I do color it and dry it everyday.  My hair is not the type that can just air dry and actually be presentable.  I have to style it every day.

Then I came across Summer's post about her hair miracle so I had to run out and buy this:

Last night I added it to my hair and wrapped my head in seran wrap (for 2 hours) since I didn't have a shower cap.  Yes, it was comical and yes, my children looked at me like I was an alien.  I didn't care because I'm vein like that and freaking out about my hair.

I have to say this made my hair extremely soft, but it did not miraculously fix my fried bang.

Seriously.  What is going on?  My hair has never done this!  I'm trying to avoid cutting my bangs, but I'm starting to think I won't have a choice.  I'm just not sure that cutting them will really fix the problem.

Have any of you seen this before?  Any more great ideas?  I'm game for pretty much anything that doesn't involve me shaving my head.

Weekend recap

Monday, May 24, 2010

This weekend was fairly uneventful.

Friday night the kids stayed at my parents, so Joey and I had exciting plans of ordering pizza and curling up in bed to watch a movie.  We got a call from some friends who invited us over for a cook out, so we jumped on it!  We had so much fun just sitting outside, chatting, and eating.

Saturday I spent all morning in bed (since Joey was at work and the kids were at my parents).  It was fabulous.  Then I had to be at church at 2pm for rehearsal and service.  After church, I picked up that pizza that we missed on Friday and headed home.  Joey and I were so tired that we ate our dinner and crashed.

Seriously.  At like 7pm.

We asked the kids if they could put themselves to bed and they were cool with that, so we were OUT!  Actually, Joey ended up carrying Taylor to bed at about 10pm.  He always has grand ideas of staying up late, but always crashes early.  Ashton, on the other hand... who knows what time she finally went to bed!

Sunday was more of Saturday - I was at church nearly all day.  Well, at least it seemed that way (but I'm not complaining).  Then I grabbed the kiddos and headed home to tackle the laundry.

Please don't be jealous of all the fun I had this weekend.

We've got a winner!

Friday, May 21, 2010

Random.org has chosen the winner of the Le Creuset giveaway.

And the winner is...

Lisa, from The Mendez Family!  Yay!!

I have to tell you that I was so excited when I counted down to number 24 because Lisa and I have been friends IRL for forever!  Go check out her blog and take a peek at her adorable kids.

Congrats Lisa!  I'll shoot you an email shortly.

Just beachy!

*Don't forget to sign up for my current giveaway. Giveaway ends today at noon CST!

My mom texted me yesterday and asked if we had plans for Memorial Day weekend. She rented a 3 bedroom condo at the beach and wanted all of us to go (my parents, our family, and my brothers family).

Oh my gosh, people. I could not be more excited!! I need a vacation so bad! The academy, graduation, and adjusting to Joey's new schedule has left all of us wiped out! And amazingly enough, that is the ONLY weekend that Joey has off. He's changing schedules that weekend, so he has Saturday, Sunday, AND Monday off (until 10pm, that is). It's a police officer miracle!!

Now, here's where you all come in.

Um, I'm not beach ready. Seriously. I thought I had until July to get ready to parade (ha ha!) around in my beachware, but BAM! Now I only have 7 days.

So, send me all your crash diets that could possibly help me drop a few LBS. I know you have them. I know you've used them. DO SHARE!

Happy Friday, peeps! I'll announce the winner of the giveaway later this afternoon.

Things I'm lovin' (ok, it's all about food)

Lately, I'm pretty much addicted to anything with spinach and artichokes. Earlier this week I had this Lean Cuisine for lunch and it was so yummy!!

I'm also loving these frozen omelets!  I always have such a hard time figuring out what to eat for breakfast and these taste great and keep me from loading up on carbs.

Another yummy breakfast that I found recently is the Jimmy Dean D-Lite sandwiches.  They have more carbs, but they're still high in protein and they are GOOD!

My new favorite thing for lunch, when dining out, is the Chili's house salad with their citrus balsamic vinaigrette dressing (on the side, of course).  I'm not a salad person usually, but this salad is so good!

And one last thing that I think I could add to virtually anything these days?  Cilantro!!  YUMMM!

So, what are your favorites these days?  Anything new and delicious I should try?

George Costanza was such a smart guy!

Yesterday I ate my lunch at my desk.  Usually, I run errands on the remainder of my lunch hour (or go to my parents house and hang), but yesterday I had nothing so I just decided to work through lunch.

Then I realized I was kind of sleepy.

Remember that episode of Seinfeld when he would nap under the boss' desk?  Well, my boss has a couch.  And a lock on his office door.  And he's in Finland.

Guess where I spent half of my lunch hour?

I'm not gonna lie.  It was nice.

I just have to wonder why it's taken me almost 5 years to figure this out?

weekend recap

*Don't forget to sign up for my current giveaway.

I had another very strange dream last night, but let's not talk about that, ok?

Let's talk about the weekend.

Friday afternoon I got a text from Joey telling me we needed to record the 5 o'clock, 6 o'clock, and 9 o'clock news because he was going to be on TV.

What?? What happened??

No response. I guess he can't text while arresting people.

So I went online and set the DVR to record. When I got home Friday evening, I turned on the 5 o'clock recording and there he was! My husband, less than one week on the job, being interviewed on the news. I was so proud of him! Before I even got home I had people texting and emailing me that they had seen him on the news. It was kind of fun, I'm not gonna lie.

It was nothing major (thank goodness!), just people driving around low water crossings. But either way, it was my hubby on TV! How fun!

Later that evening Joey took Taylor to see Iron Man 2 and Ashton and I had a little dinner date.

Saturday, Taylor's soccer game was canceled due to all the rain we had, but Ashton's volleyball game was a success. And by "success", I mean they played very well, not that they won. The other teams' coach is a professional volunteer coach. Seriously, he has 4 teams, I think. (Get a life, buddy.)

Saturday night, Joey and I had dinner reservations at a nice restaurant in town. I had received a gift card from my boss to this restaurant, and we would never have gone without one, so we thought it would be a nice way to celebrate Joey's first week on the job.

Well, let me just tell you, Joey and I are not fancy people. We don't eat fancy food. And we don't like to spend fancy money. Let's just say that even with the $50 gift card, we still had to pay $20! CRAZY!!

At least we got a nice pic.

After dinner, we headed to Starbucks.  We drank coffee and sat and talked for a while (and I dripped coffee on my white dress.  Isn't that just what happens when you wear white?).  I think it was the best time we've had in a while.  I just love being with Joey - and sitting and catching up was just what I needed!

Sunday, Joey was back to work, I headed to church with the kids, then ran some errands before heading back to the house for a much needed nap.

Which didn't really happen because honestly, who can sleep with a cute 6 year old coming in your room every 5 minutes?

Oh, and on the way home for my nap, I saw this and had to snap a pic:

Umm... "Going out for business"??  Do you think they meant "Going out of business"??  Ha ha!

Translation, please?

I had the strangest dream last night! It was one of those nights where I felt like I was dreaming all.night.long and it seemed so real!

So if anyone wants to take stab at what the heck this means, be my guest!

My dream was about me, getting ready for a wedding - my wedding - but I'm already married. I was already married in my dream to. And I was marrying my husband, but maybe it was a vow renewal?

I was curling my hair (I've been a bit obsessed with this lately) and had my dress there, ready to go, but I hadn't tried it on yet. I was about to get married and hadn't tried on my dress. It was my original wedding dress, too! I mean, I'm a bit slimmer now than I was when I got married, but still! Who gets married without trying on their dress?

Also, we were having a reception and my bridesmaids were providing all the food. (Weird, I know.) But they hadn't prepared anything (In my dream, they were supposed to serve cheesecake balls.  HUH?  Never heard of them!). When I asked them about it, moments before the ceremony, they said they had decided to only serve fruit.

Then I realized I never ordered a cake! So I contemplated running to Wal-mart and buying a prepared cake from the bakery.  In my dress, mind you.  By this time I already put it on.

This is not going well.

But that's ok, because that's when I woke up.

So, what's your take? I can't even begin to give this one any meaning! LOL

MHR Friday

*Don't forget to sign up for my current giveaway.

You all know by now that Joey graduated last Friday from the police academy. You also know by now that I am the proudest wife on the planet.

I think this is my favorite picture from the whole experience:

This picture totally and completely describes how proud I am.  I love Joey so much, and to see him work so hard to accomplish a dream that he's had for quite a while was just overwhelming.

For the last 8 months, he has studied so hard, endured hell-ish physical training, and sacrificed personal desires to get to this point. To see all of this pay off with the highest honor - to see him be awarded the Top Cadet in his class - was more than I could imagine.  I knew he could (would) do it!

Joey, I'm so proud of you.  You are my rock, my hero, my love, and my best friend.  I'll continue to pray for you constantly - not only for your safety (of course!) but that God would grant you all the desires of your heart.  I know you're living your dream and I could not be more happy to be living it with you.

Psalm 121

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot slip—
       he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
       will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The LORD watches over you—
       the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
       nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD will keep you from all harm—
       he will watch over your life;
8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going
       both now and forevermore.

Mother's Day

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

I'm a few days late in my recap, but better late than never, right?

For me, Mother's Day actually began on Thursday when both kids brought me home an entire cake (each) from school. Such a sweet gesture! One of our local grocery stores provided the cakes and the kids got to decorate them.

Sunday, since Joey had to work, I took the kids to my parents and celebrated with them and my brother and his family.  My dad and brother were so great!  They cooked the entire meal by themselves (brisket, homemade scalloped potatoes, and salad!) and the moms didn't have to lift a finger.  It was great!

For my mom, my brother and I bought her a "mom" charm, along with two separate charms - one with my birthstone and one with his. She loves it!

The kids were very thoughtful and I had several handmade cards. I always love the handmade things they bring me on special days. (The Target gift card wasn't bad either.)

(Don't you just love Taylor's smile?  He's so silly!)

Later that evening, after Joey got home from work, we took his mom to dinner. We got her a similar charm to my mom's, but hers said "Mimi" and had Ashton and Taylor's names around the outside of the circle. It's super cute!

And I absolutely love this pic of Joey and his mom.

I'd say it was a successful day, although it will take some getting used to with Joey working on holidays.  I missed him!

He certainly can NOT be trusted!

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Joey found Scruffy (yes, he's already named her) last night while he and Taylor were on a bike ride on the trails behind our house.  I don't know if you can tell from the pic, but she is absolutely skin and bones!  It's so horrible!  Her hair was matted and full of burs.

Joey couldn't take it, so he picked up Scruffy and carried her a mile and a half back to our house and gave her some food and water.

When I got home with Ashton from volleyball, he looked at me and said, "I need to show you something."  He grabbed his flashlight and took me in the backyard, around the back of the house, where Scruffy had taken up residence in the cushy flower bed.

My reaction?  "What is that???"

Then I knelt down and pet her and felt how skinny she was.  So, so sad!  I convinced Joey to give her a bath and after we did, she went right into the dog house and appears to have stayed there all night.

Can you see her ribs now? UGH!! So heartbreaking.

We think she may be full grown - she doesn't look like a puppy - and that someone may have dumped her in the park behind our house.  She's obviously been roughing it for quite some time, but she loves the kids, so I think she's been around kids before.  Joey said that once he got her home, she would go to Taylor much quicker than she came to him.  And she comes to Ashton immediately.

This is not good.  Not good at all.  But really, what can you do when you see this poor thing?  You can't leave her in the woods, right??

Monday, May 10, 2010

I am completely on overload today. So much has happened since I posted last and I just have no idea where to begin.

I think I'll summarize the last 5 days and then expand throughout the week. Sound like a plan?

  • Izzy arrived, but her luggage didn't.
  • We went to dinner at Dickey's (she loves San Antonio BBQ) and then picked up stuff to make the badge for Joey's graduation cake.
  • We went to Target so Izzy could pick up some things since she had no luggage.  They don't have Target in Montreal, so this was a necessary stop.

  • Izzy's luggage was delivered to our house at 1:30 in the morning.  The dog freaked out, which freaked Joey out.  He almost grabbed his gun, but didn't, which was good.  It was just luggage.
  • Izzy and I went to the gym and had a kick-butt workout.
  • We went home and started making fondant for the badge on Joey's cake

  • We got dressed and headed to the "Coin Ceremony" where the cadets were issued their badge and gun.
Pics of me, Izzy, Joey's mom, and my dad. (My mom had to work.)

  • The ceremony was amazing.  I was an emotional mess (because I'm so incredibly proud of my husband I can hardly contain it).  Joey was awarded the Top Driver award and also was one of the top 3 in PT and was given a "Studley Dudley" shirt.
(Can you tell I'm proud?? I so badly want to post all one million pictures that were taken, but Joey said no pics of him in uniform on the blog.  Hopefully this one will be ok.)

  • After the ceremony, we headed home to work some more on the cake then went to dinner - Mexican food and margaritas!

  • The big day!  We went shopping that morning for the food for the big party I was throwing that night.
  • Back home to get ready for the BIG graduation ceremony.
  • At graduation, Joey was awarded the highest honor - Top Cadet.  He had the highest overall average of his whole class.
  • He made a wonderful speech and I cried like a baby.
  • He did it!!!  They took the oath of service and I cried like a baby again.
  • We took a million pictures until Joey had finally had enough.  I think his cheeks hurt.
  • Izzy and I headed out to our friends place where we were having the party and started getting everything together.
  • The party was a huge success.
(See that badge?  That's what we spent 2 days trying to make.  I had a picture in my head of how I wanted the cake to look and Izzy made the fondant to match.  SO HAPPY with how it turned out.)

  • Joey worked his first shift and had an awesome day!
  • Izzy and I were so incredibly exhausted, we took the kids to IHOP then came home and chilled the rest of the day.  It was amazing.

  • When Joey got home, Izzy, Joey and I watched Zoolander.  It was a must since Izzy had never seen it and had told us earlier in the week that she couldn't turn left.  (She's a fitness model.  Evidently Derek Zoolander isn't the only model that has that problem.)

  • Joey worked again.
  • The kids and I took Izzy to the airport at 6am.
  • Mothers Day festivities reigned (more on this later in the week).

In case you're wondering (if you even made it through this entire post), I'm exhausted.  I need a vacation.  But I wouldn't change the past 5 days for anything.  We had so much fun and I'm so proud of Joey.

Babe, I love you more than life.

Yesterday I was tagged in 8x8 by California Wife at Life as a California Wife.

    Here's the scoop:

    1. Go to your photo files and select the 8th photo folder.
    2. Select the 8th photo in that folder.
    3. Post that photo along with the story behind it.
    4. Then challenge 8 blogging friends to do the same.

    Here's the pic...

    Here's the story:

In March of 2008, I had a photo shoot with a photog friend of ours.  See, back in December of the previous year I had a great idea for a gift for Joey that I hoped to give him for our anniversary in February.  I totally missed that deadline and decided to give it to him for his birthday in April.  I had a full photo shoot and then designed a book with the best pics and lots of mushy text. And he loved it. :)

I'm lame and not tagging anyone, but if you want to play along, jump in!

    weekend recap

    Monday, May 3, 2010

This was another tremendously full weekend - getting ready for Joey to start work this Saturday!  (On a side note, I can not even believe that we are here already!  So crazy!!)

Friday night, we managed to squeeze in a date - which was a very good thing, since I was completely stressed out over a random bill we received from the orthodontist saying we owed nearly $600 before Ashton gets her braces off in 3 weeks.  Umm... I paid the final balance last month.  What's up with this??

Anyway, we hit up Cosi for dinner and had a yummy sandwich and tomato soup.  It was the best ever.  If you have a Cosi near you, you must eat there.

Then we headed to see this:

Ok, you should know that neither of us enjoy horror flicks, but since we both grew up with this (these) movies, we had to see it.  Apparently, so did the infant who was sitting in front of us, just down a ways.  I must say, though, she did not care for this movie one bit and let everyone know exactly how she felt.  Unfortunately her mother was not paying too much attention. (I know, shocking, right?)

Saturday was spent the usual way, for the most part - volleyball games and soccer games.  Ashton volleyball game was at 8am again and unfortunately her team was still asleep.  Oh, they were physically there, but it was not pretty.  Not pretty at all.

Taylor's soccer game was a bit better.  They scored their first 2 goals of the season, which was really exciting!  (I should note that one of those goals was inadvertently scored for the other team, but it was scored, nonetheless.)  Taylor played goalie again and caught another 1-on-1 kick.  That's my boy!

Joey spent much of Saturday taking care of lots of "honey-dos".  There was quite a bit on his list, but he did great and accomplished tons!  Later that night we hit up the 30% off sale at Old Navy and got the kids some shorts and swim suits.  Seriously, if they could stop growing that would be fabulous.

Sunday I could not seem to get my tail out of bed, so we didn't go to church.  Shhhhh!  Don't tell anyone.  Taylor entertained himself quite well by making this:

What is this, you ask?  Why, it's the worlds tallest Star Wars lego-man.  He took all of his Star Wars legos and connected the legs, then the bodies, then the heads, and then put one helmet on top.  Bravo, Taylor.  Bravo!
After lunch we headed to the pool where I proceeded to do a horrible job at applying sunscreen and walked away with the craziest tan lines known to man.  Good job, Steph.

When we left the pool we went to Joey's mom's house for dinner - and also Joey had to replace her garbage disposal.  That went rather well and there were hardly any expletives used during this home improvement task.  Joey was then rewarded with a giant plate of spaghetti and chocolate chip cookies.

Later that night I made my weekly trip to the grocery story - which I know is not exciting in any way, shape, or form.  This is why I hate to grocery shop on Sunday evenings:

So, was you weekend as full as mine?  I don't think my week will be any slower since we have graduation ceremonies, friends coming to town, and lots of fun planned.

    Rest. Who needs it?

    let's get acquainted
